Hi Tammy:
I've done programs, but not to your degree, however, the students were =
enthused. I dressed as a teenager of the '60's: long blond wig, go-go =
boots, leotards, black suede vest and palazzo pants, but I also carried =
'60's evening wear as a comparison: a gown, wig, jewellery and a =
crochetted evening bag. The age of the students didn't matter, they all =
wanted me to change wigs. =20

Ensure that your teacher is dressed authentic. The teacher can't be =
concerned that the children may laugh at her. I'm sure that some =
teachers were strict and others would laugh. The school program would =
revolve around arithmetic, printing, reading, writing on the chalk board =
(teacher and students), a school bell on the desk, a ruler for =
reprimanding, getting the kids attention. The teacher has to do her =
homework as once she starts her program, it'll flow.

Try googling 1860's groceries, it may pop up.
Edith

Subject: [Bcma-l] Slate pencils and schools

  Hi, everyone,

The recent questions about slate pencils has reminded me to send out =
this general query, to all of you who have historic schoolhouses and =
programs in them:

Can you offer any advice and suggestions for a short (say 15-30 =
minute) program that can be run for a group of mixed ages? We are =
holding an Anne of Green Gables event in August, which will include a =
day in the life of Anne - the schoolhouse scene, the Sunday school =
picnic, more mundane chores like laundry. We have room in our little =
schoolhouse for about 15 students, and I'm trying to put together a =
lesson that can be taught shortly before our Anne cracks her slate over =
Gilbert's head.

Also, does anyone know where I can track down general store prices =
from about 1880 - 1885? (Just how much did Matthew pay for those twenty =
pounds of brown sugar, for example?) Our newspapers only go back as far =
as 1908.

  Thanks!

  Tammy

(And, if you're in the area, feel free to join us - August 14-16!)
