The Richmond Art Gallery (RAG) is a public gallery operated in a
partnership between the City of Richmond and the Richmond Art Gallery
Association (RAGA). The vision of the RAG is "to be one of the most
important pubic galleries in Canada and to increasingly enlarge our
audiences and their understanding and enjoyment of contemporary art".
We are currently looking for a dynamic individual to join the team as
the Curator of the RAG. Reporting to the Manager, Cultural Services and
working closely with RAGA, the Curator works collaboratively with the
Director to set the direction and overall vision for RAG.
DUTIES:
* As the Curator of the Richmond Art Gallery you will be responsible
for the artistic vision of the RAG and the planning and
implementation of the exhibition program including:
* Developing long-term strategic plans for the exhibitions program
in alignment with the organization's strategic plan;
* Independently researching, curating, and presenting a broad range
of exhibitions of contemporary art and related ideas;
* Identifying and overseeing the presentation of touring exhibitions
from other institutions;
* Preparing all project budgets;
* Writing and overseeing the production of catalogues, gallery
guides and other communications and educational materials;
* Preparing written materials about exhibitions for the purposes of
publicity, education and fundraising;
* Educating the community about art through public lectures and
publications and planned docent training;
* Assisting the Director and Board with a broad range of fundraising
activities;
* Cultivating and maintaining artist, donor, board, collector and
community relations; and
* Supervising and mentoring staff interns and volunteers concerning
curatorial and exhibitions related activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's Degree in Studio Arts, Curatorial Studies and/or Art History or
related field of study, accompanied by a minimum five years'
professional experience in similar positions OR an equivalent
combination of training and experience will be considered. The incumbent
will have a demonstrated credibility as a curatorial professional; a
broad knowledge of contemporary art and community involvement;
creativity and passion for the work, a bold vision for the Gallery and
the ability to translate this vision into an ambitious exhibitions
program; sensitivity to the role of a public contemporary art
institution in an urban center and an eagerness to develop and encourage
programming that reflects the rich diversity of the community and the
art world at large. The successful candidate will possess strong
administrative and management skills, be an outstanding communicator and
skilled manager with the demonstrated ability to work collegially and
collaboratively with a broad range of staff. Experience in a public
gallery or municipal environment is an asset.
*This Regular Part-Time position is based on a 30 hour work week.
