*MEDIA RELEASE* **
For immediate release from
Kamloops Art Gallery
May 1, 2008
*Endangered species featured in first hanging exhibition*
A 2.5 m papier mâché blue whale with some fishy friends
â??hanging outâ?? in the Atrium of the Gallery.
The Kamloops Art Gallery is delighted to present the exhibition
*/Hanging in the Balance/ *by the students of Beattie School of the
Arts. The exhibition features three-dimensional renditions of at-risk
animals made from a variety of materials. The exhibition runs from May 3
to June 20, 2008 in the BMO Open Gallery and the air above itâ??a first
for the Gallery.
Every year more of Earth's creatures are added to the long list of
endangered, threatened or vulnerable species. This list will continue to
grow unless we do something soon. The students and staff at Beattie
believe the first step is awareness and so have created /Hanging in the
Balance/.
The students of Beattie School of the Arts spent time studying some of
our at-risk animal friends. Students learned that what they do and the
choices they make have an impact on the lives of the animals around
them. To create their artwork, students used materials that could have
been discarded in community landfills. Materials such as shredded paper,
newspaper and compact disc jewel cases were reused to create water
creatures, arctic mammals and other land dwellers. Students from
Kindergarten to Grade 10 came together to create the work on display.
The students worked collaboratively within each classroom and between
grades (older students worked with their younger buddies). As with the
polar bear, high school students created the inner structures, which
were then passed on to elementary students for completion. The polar
bear is very special as every elementary student took part in attaching
its â??fur.â?? The culmination of the students' work is /Hanging in the
Balance/. Students of all ages worked together for the same important
cause. This exhibition is truly a community effort.Â
The BMO Open Gallery is free to the public, and open to proposals for
use from any community group.
