[Bcma-l] why museums? Access vs. preservation and can we justify public funding if something is not on display?

Dan's original point accurately describes emerging museums; volunteer =20=
organizations moving toward professionalism and attendant additional =20
costs. At the other end of the spectrum large and medium size museums =20=
have, for twenty years, moved toward amateurism and volunteerism in =20
cost cutting strategies as well as many other strategies, some that =20
James brought up. Capital cost funding for new museums over the past =20
few years does seem a curious thing at a time when existing museums =20
struggle to keep their doors open during: continuous operating =20
shortfalls due to reduced funding, declining attendance and devaluing =20=
currency. The money buys less just when the costly mistake of =20
deferred maintenance comes home to roost. Merge the sport ministry =20
and the culture ministry before the Olympic games and designate a ski =20=
resort a "Cultural Capital of Canada." A small collapse in the U.S. =20
economy. Olympic game cost over runs. Siphon back the paltry few =20
dollars doled out to keep museums open until the great celebration is =20=
over...
I doubt anyone could design a better disaster for small and mid sized =20=
museums across B.C.
Systems, regardless of what sort they are, slow down when they lose =20
energy and speed up when they gain, and all systems are transformed =20
by this. Complex systems require more energy; simple ones less. =20
Burnout occurs when you become the source of energy for a starving =20
system; you work harder, faster, longer etc... to prevent your museum =20=
system from coming to a complete halt. Not the best solution.
Money is only a representation of energy and if energy is dwindling =20
we can only reduce demand or increase supply or some measure of both. =20=
To reduce demand is an instinctive reaction in an apparent absence of =20=
any possible way to increase supply.
Reduce the number of systems
Reduce the size of each system
Reduce energy demand in an existing system (cut everything)
Reduce output (programs, standards etc...)
and increase supply:
Collaborations of every sort as new energy
Use alternate energy forms (pleasant surprises here)
Workshop assets ( if you don't have the energy to do this, reach out =20
to someone in the community who does)(create a job somewhere)
Support community currencies and local barter etc... (more surprises)
Design small efficient systems first (zero monthly costs)
Charitable donations (study churches- stats Canada -culture is not =20
even on the map here)
Commission fundraisers
Think of other ways to self sustain. There won't be a single =20
solution; as every museum is different thankfully, but, building =20
working models can't hurt anyone.
