TONIGHT - 7:00 pm
Border Zones Exhibition Reception with Performance Art by Tania Mouraud and
Rosanna Raymond
Border Zones: New Art Across Cultures, curated by Karen Duffek, MOA Curator
of Contemporary Visual Art, and presented with Vancouver 2010 Cultural
Olympiad, is an exhibition of international contemporary art that opened
MOAs Audain Gallery on Saturday, January 23, 2010.
At 7:00 pm this evening, two of the exhibiting artists, Tania Mouraud and
Rosanna Raymond, will present performance pieces related to their works in
the show. Other artists will also be in attendance.
Rosanna Raymond's piece, SaVAge Klub, which accompanies her installation,
Cling to the Sea, responds to stereotypical representations of Pacific women
perpetuated by artists, anthropologists, and collectors over time -
including Frank Burnett, whose donation of Pacific materials to UBC in 1927
formed MOA's founding collection.
In Face to Face, her installation at MOA, Tania Mouraud shows images of
destruction and waste that parallel global patterns of consumption,
accompanied by an almost overwhelmingly loud soundscape of industrial noise.
In tonight's performance, As it Were, Mouraud will fill the Great Hall with
the sound of ringing cash registers, bombs, and sirens, smashing MOA's
usually quiet and ordered environment, and forcing us to reconsider the
boundaries of our own expectations about what museums are or can be.
Participating artists in Border Zones: New Art Across Cultures include
Hayati Mokhtar, Dain-Iskandar Said, John Wynne, Edward Poitras, Tania
Mouraud, Thamotharampillai Shanaathanan, Marianne Nicolson, Gu Xiong,
Prabakar Visvanath, Rosanna Raymond, Ron Yunkaporta, and Laura Wee Láy Láq.
