I haven't tried it yet, but have heard good things about the Madrona
system: http://madronapro.com/
It's an Open Source system, which means it has a free version...always a
plus...

We are using InMagic and we run a continuous accession database and
simply prefix the accession number with an A (Archive) or M (Museum).
This works well for us.
