Discovery Kids Summer Workshops
Cowichan-The BC Forest Discovery Centre is offering special workshops for
children this July and August. Each workshop has a theme related to the
museum, including Forest Survivor, Whirligigs & Pick Up Sticks, Marsh
Monsters, and Junior Conductor. These educational workshops are designed
to enhance a family day at the museum, says Aimee Greenaway, Curator at the
museum. The workshops take place in the morning so families can spend the
afternoon riding the train and picnicking together.
The workshops feature hands on activities that are geared for children
between the ages of 5 and 12. The Forest Survivor workshop uses a scavenger
hunt to teach children how to use a map and compass to navigate. Marsh
Monsters encourages children to search for pond creatures, while Whirligigs
& Pick Up Sticks provides an opportunity for children to play with toys that
were popular 100 years ago. In the Junior Conductor workshop, children will
learn how the steam train works and meet the engineer. The workshops are
led by our summer students, says Greenaway. Their enthusiasm will
motivate children to enjoy learning and encourage active participation.
Parents will enjoy watching their child explore the museum and will stay
with the group to supervise their child.
Workshops will be available weekly on Thursdays, July 15-August 26, from
10:30 am - 12:00 pm. All caregivers must remain with their child for the
duration of the workshop. The workshops are available on a drop-in basis
and are included in regular admission price. Members may use their seasons
pass. The workshops will also be available Mondays, Tuesdays,Wednesdays and
Fridays to pre-booked summer daycamp groups for a special admission rate.
