Speaking from 18 years of experience as Curator at BVM ...
1. Any music written by Burnaby people (born or resident there) or
about Burnaby. There is at least one sheet music with a Burnaby
publication address on it ... but it has the name of the subdivision
postal office, not "Burnaby" per se. It was "Buena Vista, BC" as I
recall. (You have a bird's eye view real estate developer's "map" of
that subdivision). There MAY also be one about Rudolf the Red Nosed
Reindeer with an alleged connection to Burnaby. There was a legend that
the song was written by a Burnaby resident but evidence contradicted
that as I recall.
2. Any sheet music in displayable, reproducible condition that
suite your museum's time period (c.1920 to the end of 1925) and
therefore suitable for display in a house or the music shop in your
museum village. Due to the bright sunshine damage in the music shop I
opted for laser colour copies. Today I would opt for colour scans for
display.
3. "Classics" that might be suitable for a display in a museum
gallery setting not bound by your time period.
4. Your Vaudeville group might be interested in some, especially
"classic" recognizable songs .
Regardless of what Tom might try to claim, that sheet music was all
there when I arrived at BVM in 1986. I do so swear on a stack of sheet
music, so help me Beethoven!
;-)
The New Westminster Museum and Archives only has 5,221 pieces of sheet
music (honest!) so if you don't want those that were offered to you
..... Nah! Come to think of it, I can't read sheet music anyways.
;-)
Honest ... that is what our recently completed inventory shows! Some of
these are multiple sets for ever instrument in a symphony orchestra! I
too would like to hear of a
"Sheet Music Museum" wanting more examples....

Subject: [BCMA] Sheet music collections
Burnaby Village Museum has been offered a collection of 70 pieces of
sheet music. When I did a quick search of the database I discovered that
we already have several hundred pieces of sheet music in the collection.
Some of it has delightful cover illustrations and are visually very
intersting but what is the importance of the musical score?
Is their anyone who knows of a knowledgable source about sheet music?
Is there an archive or other collection in British Columbia that makes a
specialty of musical material?
We have scanned the covers of a number of music sheets (because they
look nice) but is that the most important information to be had?
>From my point of view it would be good to thin out this collection. I am
looking for the best criteria to assess what we have.
