The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria, British Columbia is pleased to offer the following online learning opportunity for professionals and volunteers working in museums, art galleries, heritage sites, cultural centres and other nonprofit organizations.
BUILDING COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS HA 488S (1.5 units)
May 2- August 7, 2011; distance offering
Instructor: Elizabeth Kidd
Strong, sustained, and mutually beneficial relationships with communities are critical to museum, heritage and cultural organizations seeking to play timely, relevant, positive, and socially responsible roles in society. This new distance education course builds your knowledge and skills associated with effective community cultural and social development activities, and strengthens your capacity to:
* Develop an awareness and understanding of the major changes and trends that affect your community
* Assess readiness to initiate community partnerships and acquire competencies in community cultural development
* Identify, record and map community assets
* Build and sustain reciprocal, mutually beneficial relationships with diverse groups through a range of appropriate and collaborative initiatives
* Include and balance diverse perspectives associated with effective community cultural and social development activities
* Facilitate group decision making, dealing with controversy and resolving group conflict
* Evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of community partnerships
This course is designed to meet the needs of a range of individuals who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in community-centred practice, including:
* Professionals and volunteers in museum and heritage sectors, education, and cultural and community centres
* Members of NGOs, non-profit, and service organizations as well as ethnic and cultural groups working with or building relationships with any of the above type of organizations
Registration Deadline: April 4, 2011, late registrations accepted if space permits
Fee: CAD$594.00 plus coursepack (prices determined by the UVic Bookstore). PLEASE NOTE THAT TUITION IS SUBJECT TO INCREASE IN MAY 2011

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE, BC Arts Council
Next deadline: April 1 http://www.bcartscouncil.ca/guidelines/special_programs/training/professional_dev_assistance.html This program is designed to assist professional artists, arts administrators and museums professionals in BC to undertake specific activities to advance their practice or career. The program assists professional artists, arts administrators and museums professionals who demonstrate a high degree of critical self-reflection and link the proposed project with the next stage of their professional development.

Elizabeth Kidd is a community arts consultant who has previously worked with the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre in Vancouver, the Edmonton Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Canada, the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, the Newfoundland Museum, and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Elizabeth specializes in work with cultural non-profit organizations to help them develop an organizational vision, mission, and mandate, based on the needs and expectation of the communities and individuals they serve. Participants in these collaborative, interdisciplinary projects have included professionals and amateur artists working with disadvantaged and communities at risk, neighbourhood groups, and diverse cultural groups.
