Summer Job with City of Surrey Heritage Collections

(Dependent upon award of YCW Grant)

 

Location:  Heritage Services

                  17671 - 56th Avenue

                  Surrey, BC

                  V3S 1C9

 

Title/Classification:         Collections Assistant, Museum (CSA3)

                                                Rate of pay:  $19.88/hour

 

Start & End Dates:             June 7 - July 30, 2011 (8 weeks)

 

Days of Position:                Tuesday to Saturday

 

Hours of Position:              10:00am - 5:00pm (allowing for one hour unpaid lunch)

 

Job Description:

              We seek a determined summer student with initiative, who has a strong interest in the care and

              management of western Canadian domestic, early industrial and agricultural artefacts in a museum

              setting. Under the guidance of the Curator-Archivist at Surrey Museum, the successful candidate will

              inventory our 1912 Hall basement collection, modify its current organization, photograph its contents,

              assess its present condition, photograph its contents, and implement basic conservation and climate control

              measures.   

 

Duties:

       -      Map existing ad hoc collection storage arrangement in the 1912 Hall basement.

       -      Inventory existing shelf contents, confirm artefact identities and assess condition.

       -      Photograph, label and re-shelve artefacts according to the Chenhall museum classification.

-      Set up basic environmental monitoring equipment and record conditions.

-      Investigate and recommend further conservation, pest management, and environmental improvements. 

 

Qualifications:

-          An interest in Canadian history, particularly Surrey, and Canadian material culture.

-          A career interest in museum management, or conservation.

-          Undergraduate qualification in a relevant field.

-          Some graduate training or experience in museology, conservation, or artefact photography.

-          Good communicator and team player. 

-          Reliable, well-organized, with initiative and determination.

-          Must be available for the hours/days required and for the full duration of the position.

-          Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or have refugee status.

-          Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

-          Must be a student returning to school, aged 16-30.

-          Must be registered on the Young Canada Works on-line candidate inventory.

(NB: Priority will be given to candidates who have not previously participated in the YCW summer work program)
