The first offering of the course is planned for May - August, 2013, with course development expected from September 2012 to approximately February 2013.
This course has the following calendar description:
CH562 Curatorial Planning and Practice
Considers how traditional concepts of curatorship have shifted significantly in the face of more democratic relations with community, more subjective perspectives of knowledge, and increasing emphasis on the museum's social and educative roles. It explores the nature and scope of contemporary critical curatorial theory and practice and focuses on the ways in which curators engage with cultural heritage resources, develop sustainable collections, and generate and share associated knowledge to meet the needs of diverse communities.
We are seeking an expert content specialist and dynamic instructor with a distinguished professional and teaching background, who holds specialized knowledge of the range of international, national and local principles and regulations that guide curatorial planning and practice. The successful candidate will be familiar with current issues and developments in the curatorial sector, and be professionally involved in curatorial/museum networks.
This initiative involves the development of curriculum and instructional materials in collaboration with Cultural Heritage Studies staff and the University's Distance Education Services to create an engaging graduate-level online course for museum professionals from Canada and beyond, as well as for graduate students from related programs. Candidates should hold a PhD or minimum Masters-level education in Museum Studies or a related discipline, and have significant and recent professional experience working within the museum/curatorial sector, have evidence of successful university-level and/or professional teaching, and demonstrate experience in relevant written academic and professional communications. Further information on the course scope and suggested/draft course learning objectives can be obtained from the Program office.
While course development and instruction are two separate appointments, it is anticipated (and preferable) that the successful candidate will undertake both components. The stipend for course development is $6000 (CDN). The stipend for course delivery is determined on the basis of academic credentials and prior academic teaching experience.
A letter of interest, a CV outlining education, professional, teaching and writing/publishing experience, and the names and contact information of two references should be sent by July 25, 2012 to:
