*Come Celebrate Canada’s 145^th Birthday, Barkerville-style!*

*June 26, 2012 (Barkerville, BC) – *One-hundred and forty-fiveyears ago,
three British colonies – Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the territory
containing Ontario and Quebec - put aside their differences in language,
legal-custom, and historical dispute to create the beginnings of what we
now call Canada. One year later, the gold mining town of Barkerville,
British Columbia celebrated the anniversary of that historic union by
throwing the first-ever recorded “Dominion Day” party on July 1^st ,
1868 – a full three years before BC actually/joined /the Confederation.

This July 1st, Barkerville Historic Town is at it again – as part of the
renowned heritage site’s own 150^th anniversary season - and Dominion
Day is set to explode (almost literally) with sesquicentennial fun.

“With our award-winning street interpretation, a brand new exhibit
opening for summer 2012, and family-oriented activities and events all
day long, Barkerville’s Dominion Day celebrations are going to be more
exciting than ever before,” said Fairlith Harvey, Barkerville’s Special
Event Coordinator.

“We are particularly excited to be hosting Canada’s 145^th birthday bash
in the exact location of the very first Dominion Day, during
Barkerville’s own 150^th anniversary year,” she added.

On Sunday, July 1st, Barkerville brings back its traditional Dominion
Day activities with gusto, starting with the cutting of an 8-foot long,
100-plus pound Happy Birthday Canada cake at 11:00 am. At 11:30 the fun
will continue with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony for a brand new
exhibit of multi-media representations of Barkerville’s iconic St.
Saviour’s church, courtesy of Quesnel resident and long-time city
councillor Ron Paull, which will be viewable for the first time in
Barkerville at the McIntyre House. A special presentation of thanks to
Barkerville’s Dominion Day Presenting Sponsor, Barkerville Gold Mines,
and Financial Sponsor, Scotiabank, will also take place at the ceremony.

Barkerville’s time-honoured main-street parade of costumed interpreters
will commence at 12:00 noon, starting at the /real/ St. Saviour’s, and
will be followed by an array of traditional Victorian games for both
children and adults for the remainder of the afternoon, including a
broad jump, sack race, tug-o-war, egg toss, greasy pole climb, and more.

Later in the evening (7:00 pm) guests are invited to the Dominion Day
premiere of Newman & Wright’s 1930s live radio show WCFB: ON AIR at the
Theatre Royal, followed by the House Hotel’s “olde-time” dance party,
featuring the musical styling-s of the Lakeside Ramblers. Barkerville
will cap off the night with a magnificent fireworks display at 10:00 pm.
