Indeed, such an organization does exist.  The Canadian Council for Railway
Heritage is an umbrella organization, founded in the west and reaching

OK; thanks for the quick response, Don.

 

Can certainly understand the need to keep such a holding as your's under a
critical mass. As you know, many of the collections of vintage rolling stock
across the country are too large for their available resources - trackage,
shops, volunteer labour, restoration funds, etc. Has there ever been any
thought at a collaborative effort to get federal funds for a qualitative
study that would identify on both regional and national levels what motive
and rolling stock need be preserved on historical grounds? That is, specific
existing pieces?

 

It would be more than welcome to see a major culling wherein redundant
pieces would be sold-off for scrap, containers, parts, etc. and the proceeds
turned exclusively to restoring and preserving the, say, 25 - 30% that
remains.

 

A sanctioned, systematic effort along that line is highly preferable to the
sad decline of one outfit after another having to peel this piece or that
off its roster without any benefit other than having fewer items to rust
away.

 

Does a strong national railway preservation association exist? If not, could
one be formed?
