Small publisher celebrates five years and launches BC author photography book with exhibition at the Nanaimo Museum November 24th-January 31st.

Mother Tongue Publishing of Salt Spring Island launches the long-awaited and beautiful photography book, 111 West Coast Literary Portraits, Photographs by Barry Peterson and Blaise Enright, text by BC authors, introduction by Alan Twigg with a two month exhibition of the portraits and text at the Nanaimo Museum November 24-January 31. A public reception will be held Saturday November 24th 1-3 pm. Local authors and Barry Peterson will be present. Books will be available for sale. Light refreshments will be served. Nanaimo and area authors included in the book and exhibition are Barry Broadfoot, Kim Goldberg, Katherine Gordon, Mairuth Sarsfield, George Szanto, Tim Lander, Des Kennedy, Amanda Hale, Joe Rosenblatt, Keith Harrison and more.

The original prints from the book will be exhibited over the next 8 months at the McGill Library in North Burnaby, the Nanaimo Museum, the Greater Victoria Library and the Arts Council of Greater Victoria Art Gallery and Café.

111 West Coast Literary Portraits features rare portraits of emerging, midcareer and well-known writers who have lived in B.C. Peterson and Enright shot portraits in black and white to contrast the colourful nature of each writer and to minimize visual distraction from the "character" of each. The photographs supported literacy and were exhibited in many public spaces on the Coast between 1999 and 2008 with B.C. Hydro and B.C. Gas as major sponsors. Peterson used a Hasselblad camera with Carl Zeiss lenses, considered to be the best in the world. The film was hand-processed to ensure the highest quality.

Barry Peterson completed his BA and Masters in Social Work and studied photography at the Ontario College of Art and exhibited in Winnipeg, Toronto and Vancouver. He exhibited On the Edge: Putting a Face on Homelessness, 2009-2011 on Vancouver Island. He lives in Comox B.C.

Blaise Enright studied photography, film and creative writing at the Ontario College of Art & Design. She was Executive Director of the Vancouver Cultural Alliance. She lives in Nelson, B.C.
