FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New exhibit celebrating Chinatown opens at the Maritime Museum of BC
To celebrate the 155th anniversary of Victoria's Chinatown, the Maritime Museum is proud to present an exhibit which celebrates the important contributions that Chinese Canadians made to BC's maritime heritage. Opening February 28, Floating on the Margins: Chinese Life on the Canadian Pacific Passenger Liners uses items from the Maritime Museum and UBC's Chung Collection, to illustrate the lives of early Chinese Canadian sailors and passengers on the Canadian Pacific passenger liners.
The Chung Collection is one of North America's most extensive collections on early immigration and settlement history in BC. Inspired by a poster of the RMS Empress of Asia that hung in his father's tailor shop, Dr. Chung went on to amass a collection of over 25,000 items. These items greatly contribute to understanding the story of 19th century immigration from Asia to North America and the lives that early Chinese Canadians made for themselves upon arrival.
"We're pleased and excited to have items on loan to the Maritime Museum of BC from the Chung Collection. It's a wonderful opportunity for visitors to the Museum to experience the Chung Collection, and we're looking forward to telling visitors ... about this fascinating exhibition at the Maritime Museum of BC," says Sarah Romkey, the Archivist at Rare Books and Special Collections for the University of British Columbia Library Irving K. Barber Learning Centre.
The Maritime Museum of BC is focusing on an area untouched by other local organizations to further emphasize the valuable contributions made by the Chinese community in the development of maritime interests on the coast of BC and is supported by the Victoria Symphony, the University of British Columbia, and the Victoria Chinese Commerce Association. Part of the Victoria Symphony Chinatown Celebration, Floating on the Margins honours Chinatown's 155th anniversary and more programs, events and exhibits celebrating Chinatown can be found at www.victoriasymphony.ca/events/chinatown<http://www.victoriasymphony.ca/events/chinatown>.
