We are currently in the process of transferring our collection into Sumac, which is also our volunteer, tourism, and membership management database.
Because Sumac is currently developing the collections module, I can't fully report on it just yet. My understanding is that when we have it fully set up, it will be possible to scroll through the images in order to search for an artifact without having to know the name or collections number.
But the price and the fact that all of our information could be stored into a single program was what we found very appealing. In this way, we can track a donor of an artifact and see if they are currently a member.
We have had issues with the fact that it is a java based program, so it couldn't run on any Mac computers for a week before they fixed a bug. But it is one of the easiest databases that I have worked with on the membership side of things.

I am looking for input in regards to replacing a database system for our Natural History Museum at Vancouver Island University. Currently we use the free program -Biota-however find it is getting archaic with the newer operating systems as well as not the easiest to introduce new users too.
We are interested in finding what is working well in smaller museums (we have under 10,000 items in our collection), affordable and with good support.
I appreciate any and all input.
Thanks for your time,
