October brings spooky special events and educational opportunities to
Royal BC Museum
VICTORIA, BC - Spooky special events and exclusive educational opportunities are among the highlights at the Royal BC Museum for the month of October.
First off, two Halloween events are sure to get participants in the witching mood.
On the big night itself, Oct. 31, head to the Royal BC Museum for Night Shift: Living and Dying (Again) in the Victoria Times. This adults-only event is back for a second year after a scarily successful first run.
Royal BC Museum and community experts, inspired by archival records and our human history collection, will share stories of life and death from the Victorian era as guests explore a transformed Old Town.
Costumed players will introduce guests to characters and customs from the past and may even manage to summon up the spirits of Hallowe'ens of yore through a Victorian séance.
All this, plus live music from Bučan Bučan and a cash bar. Tickets are $30, with a 10 per cent discount for members.
Wonder Sunday: Halloween, on Oct. 26 at 1 pm, will take a look at how Victorians celebrated Halloween a century ago. Wear your fanciest costumes as Old Town is transformed into a place for tricks and treats. Free with admission or membership.
A number of other opportunities await guests in October.
The Race Rocks: Ecological Reserve Tour sets sail on Saturday, Oct. 4, giving a small group of participants an exclusive opportunity to actually set foot on Race Rocks Marine Protected Area with Royal BC Museum experts.
Guests will explore tidal pools and see birds, invertebrates and mammals in one of the most spectacular marine areas on the West Coast.
Tickets are $350 per person, less 10 per cent for members, and only a limited number of seats are available.
Kids' Club Afternoon Explorations with the Robert Bateman Centre start on Oct. 1, and continue each Wednesday until Oct. 22.
This event invites young artists and naturalists to explore the magic of nature, examining the world from the perspective of how animals may see it. Kids' Club members will try out new art techniques to portray BC landscapes and animals, both predator and prey.
Sign up for one or all four. Event is limited to Kids' Club members only; join at royalbcmuseum.bc.ca.
On Thursday, Oct. 9 Dr Nancy Turner, one of Canada's leading ethnobotanists, will give her Learning, Sharing, Adapting lecture at 7 pm. Calling on her over 45 years of research, Turner will address questions about First Peoples of northwestern North America and their complex, ever-changing relationships with plants and environments.
This presentation is hosted in partnership with The School of Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria. Tickets are $16, less 10 per cent for members.
At Speaking Pictures: A Poetry Workshop participants will take a look at "ekphrasis poetry," meaning poems written about visual art, with poet, activist and educator Susan Rich.
Looking at famous examples from poets old and new, participants will sharpen their powers of observation and description, and, finally, try their hand at writing poems on actual works on art on display in the Royal BC Museum. All levels of writers are welcome.
Tickets are $45, with a 10 per cent discount for members. You must register in advance.
On Sunday, Oct. 19 Friends of the BC Archives presents British Columbia and the Victoria Photographic Album: Windows on the World and Our Place Within It.
This free lecture will see Royal BC Museum Curator of Images and Paintings Don Bourdon, speak to the most interesting examples of 19th century photo albums in the BC Archives collection.
Event starts at 2:30 pm in Newcombe Hall.
