Royal BC Museum workshops invite you to open your ears to the sounds of nature

VICTORIA, BC – The Royal BC Museum is pleased to present two events this fall that ask participants to open their ears and take in the rich, even musical, sounds of nature.

First, the Royal BC Museum’s Natural History Soundwalk workshop takes guests into the Natural History Gallery and Beacon Hill Park to stop, hear and learn about the sounds of nature. Composers and sound artists Tina Pearson and Paul Walde will lead the afternoon of sound exploration and guide participants towards an intimate auditory appreciation of our environment.

“The sound of the biosphere has been increasingly dominated by the constant presence human sounds – motors, electricity, broadcasting, people buzzing, talking, building and moving,” said Pearson. “We’re re-imagining ancient times, when the human capacity for listening was highly developed and the biosphere was teeming with the rich sounds of millions of creatures.”

Natural History Soundwalk takes place October 17, 2015, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Tickets are $20 per person, guests are asked to come prepared to be outside and note the workshop is most suitable for teens and adults

In Royal BC Museum’s second sound event, the Sonic Mimicry Workshop, on Saturday, Nov. 14, Pearson and Walde will discuss how through careful cataloguing, research and transcription, they have been working with local musicians to mimic the sounds of flora and fauna. The results of this process will be performed in January 2016 with local musicians.

Have you ever called back to a crow or tried to sing the tones of a burbling brook? This session will help you to find out how, and will include interactive sound play with participants. Guests are welcome to bring acoustic instruments.

“The workshop allows us to tune in to the unexpected interconnections between landscape, identity, and technology,” says Kim Gough, Royal BC Museum’s Adult Learning Team Lead.

Tickets are $20 per person for the workshop, which takes place from 1 to 3 p.m.
