Job Title: Archivist Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent.
Department: Archives Standard Hours: Monday – Friday; 9:00 to 4:30pm

Summary of Position: The Archivist is responsible for management of the Society’s archival collections and the development of relevant programs or activities in accordance with organizational policies and best practices within the Archival profession. Along with other colleagues, the Archivist serves as a key representative of the Museum & Archives, acting as a liaison with the public on matters pertaining to Chilliwack’s history and material culture. We are a proud member of the Archives Association of British Columbia.
Duties & Responsibilities: The Archivist reports to the Executive Director and performs the following duties:
1. Manages a significant community collection of archival records in diverse formats, including: photographs, maps, business, government and institutional records, electronic records, personal and family papers, sound recordings, books, and art work. Duties include acquiring, authenticating, and appraising archival materials, assessing conservation requirements, maintaining intellectual control of the collection, developing finding aids according to standards recognized by the archival profession in Canada, and recommending materials for de-accessioning.
2. Responds to a wide variety of research requests.
3. Assists colleagues with the research and preparation of exhibits and public programs.
4. Recruits, trains and supervises volunteers or other staff in tasks that assist the Archivist in successfully carrying out duties.
5. Collaborates with colleagues on the development of public programs, online archival access and outreach initiatives, or educational events.
6. Prepares written reports or articles, as required, for the Museum and Archives' media platforms, publications, or for internal reporting purposes.
7. Participates in other Museum and Archives duties, as assigned, and works outside of standard hours, from time to time.
Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills required for this position include:
* University degree, preferably at the graduate level, in Archival Science (M.A.S.), Library and Information Sciences (M.L.I.S.), History, or another related discipline;
* Up to date knowledge of theories, principles, practices and values of archival science, including basic archival conservation;
* Experience providing services to the public in a professional archives setting would be an asset.
* IT skills and an interest in applying digital technology to archival practice. Proficiency using computer database systems for managing Archival records and collections. Experience with a range of database software would be an asset.
* A strong interest in British Columbia and local history, and a desire to connect people to Chilliwack’s history;
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills marked by professionalism, teamwork, and courtesy. Ability to relate to, and encourage a range of users by asking clear, concise and relevant questions to obtain sufficient information to provide users with the appropriate resources and/or services;
* Because of the physical nature of some of the work required, the candidate must be physically capable of lifting 35 lb. from floor to table height and 20 lb. from table to head height.
