JOB SUMMARY

The UBC Museum of Anthropology (MOA) is a place of world arts and cultures
with a special emphasis on First Nations, Asian and other cultural
communities of British Columbia, Canada. MOA has worldwide collections which
are well known for their coverage of Canadian First Nations, Arctic, Asian,
European, and Pacific arts and cultures. The Museumis unique not only
because of its physical setting but because it has created unusually close
relationships with cultural communities in British Columbia and around the
world through experimental and collaborative research methods and
exhibitions. Part of MOA's originality comes from it being a public and
research and teaching museum. The cutting-edge scholarship of the Museum
makes possible a range of exhibitions and events that cut across traditional
disciplinary divisions to provoke creative engagement and dialogue. MOA is
creating a new position, Curator of Public Programmes & Engagement, to bring
to life the excitement and energy generated at MOA, making it available and
accessible to the public, including families, children, and the diverse
audiences MOA serves.

This position will be responsible for devising, implementing, and evaluating
a wide range of formal and informal public programmes for MOA that will
engage families, groups and individuals. The position will work to develop
programmes related to exhibits and will collaborate with curators and the
Curator of Education on school and other programmes that have a public
component. The post-holder will foster relations with diverse cultural
communities, external resource people, and artists, to develop new,
innovative and exciting programmes designed to diversify and enhance access
to MOA's established and new audiences. The post-holder will be expected to
serve as an ambassador for MOA and be a catalyst for innovative and exciting
programmes.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

The position reports to the Assistant Director, Administration and Outreach,
who will oversee work performed. A wide-latitude of decision-making is
required.

WORK PERFORMED

The position develops, implements, and evaluates Museum programs for diverse
publics.
Responsibilities include:
- Developing, planning, budgeting, and implementing public programs for the
Museum for general audiences, including family, children and special events
(children's workshops, camps, festivals, and family experience).
- Evaluating programme offerings to ensure they are meeting MOA's strategic
goals and objectives, and recommending new programmes as required.
- Maintaining historical and current knowledge about the Museum collections
and issues related to the diverse cultural groups represented at MOA.
- Initiating and engaging in appropriate consultation and partnerships with
communities and stakeholders.
- Actively engaging with colleagues and representatives from other
attractions and cultural organizations at UBC and in the Lower Mainland to
embed programmes within Vancouver's cultural milieu.
- Working with MOA Marketing and Communications Manager to actively promote
public programmes.
- Actively working with Development staff to arrange sponsorship support for
signature programmes.
- Hiring, training, supervising and evaluating Museum Student Assistants who
work as tour guides and support public programmes and events.

and contracts related to position.
- Preparing grant applications, project budgets, and contract negotiations.
- Serving on relevant museum committees as required.
- Representing the Museum at professional meetings and conferences.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR

Errors in judgment might result in difficult working relationships with
program partners, volunteers, and other staff. It could also mean loss of
trust and credibility to program partners, particularly with community
partners. If programmes are poorly planned, there will be an impact on MOA
revenues and profile in the community.

Director, Administration & Outreach.
