Job Posting: Gallery Education Assistant, Surrey Art Gallery

Are you passionate about art education and can demonstrate knowledge of contemporary art and Indigenous art practices, and want to develop skills in developing educational resources and curriculum?

Surrey Art Gallery is offering a 16-week paid position for a candidate who is a full-time student obtaining a degree in education, museum education, art education, Aboriginal education, and/or a related discipline. This position is designed to provide work experience in gallery education research and development practices at one of Canada's most vibrant visual arts institutions.

The successful candidate will be a motivated, methodical, articulate self-starter with excellent organizational and communication skills, a passion for community-based arts education, developing learner-centered educational materials, and able to work independently and as part of a team. Duties include: participating in meetings with local Indigenous artists and educators; conducting research on contemporary Indigenous art practices; assisting in the development of learner-centered educational materials, including lesson plans and educational activities for use in schools; supporting planning educational workshops for teachers and students; working with staff in the development of promotional materials and initiatives; and contributing to the creation of digital presentations and hand-outs.

We are seeking an individual who enjoys working in a dynamic environment and thrives in situations requiring meeting deadlines and adapting to change. Required skills include: strong knowledge and experience in art education theories and practices; broad knowledge of contemporary art and art history; excellent oral and written communication; solid administrative, organizational, interpersonal, and research skills; effective problem-solving skills; and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

This position will be for up to 16 weeks, and is an auxiliary, union position with a rate of $21.90 per hour plus 12% in lieu of vacation and benefits.

This position may be funded in part through Heritage Canada's Young Canada Works summer job program, and therefore applicants need to meet specific eligibility requirements including: are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible); are legally entitled to work in Canada; will be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment; are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment; will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the Young Canada Works (YCW) work assignment; have been a full-time high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment; and intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW work assignment.
