Indigenous Cultural Programmer
(Full-time hours)

The North Vancouver Museum & Archives Commission and its Indigenous Voices Advisory Committee (IVAC) is seeking an Indigenous Cultural Programmer to research, develop and present school and public programs at the new MONOVA: Museum of North Vancouver.

The Opportunity

  *   Building upon previous and ongoing collaborations and partnerships, the Indigenous Cultural Programmer’s work will further MONOVA’s initiatives to implement recommendations made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission by establishing strong working relationships with the səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nations.
  *   The scope and creativity offered by this position will be of interest to an enthusiastic and innovative educator/programmer, who enjoys creating meaningful and ongoing connections between nations and museums.
  *   This is a rare opportunity to work with experienced museum educators and programmers and an Indigenous content development group to shape the Indigenous program offerings of a brand new Museum, in a high-profile location, that will be visited by students, residents, as well as visitors from around the world.

The Cultural Programmer will contribute to and follow an annual Indigenous Programs Workplan.  They will work closely with MONOVA staff, and have the support and guidance of IVAC and its Indigenous content development group.
Responsibilities

  *   Research, record, prepare, write and deliver school and public programs
  *   Assist with coordinating the identification and hiring of Indigenous knowledge-keepers and researchers to develop, pilot-test, and present new programs;
  *   Maintain collaborative working relationships with local First Nations;
  *   Strive to identify and ensure accuracy of Indigenous content whether stories, art forms, research, knowledge sharing or language;
  *   Strive to ensure cultural practices and protocol are respectfully reflected;
  *   Respond to the guiding principles for programs and content that meet səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nations’ expectations and reflect the BC school curricula;
  *   Assist the Program Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator with cultural awareness training, preparation and oversight for museum volunteer docents;
  *   Present some programs for schools and public as needed;
  *   Working with MONOVA programmers, assist with recommended program formats to develop a calendar of Indigenous-focused programs for 2021, including suggested resource people and program presenters.

Qualifications

  *   Understanding of Indigenous culture, local traditions and protocols, and a desire to share that knowledge with museum visitors;
  *   Demonstrated experience in development and/or presentation of interpretive programs,
  *   A natural ability to collaborate with other staff members in planning, organizing and coordinating community-wide events and programs;
  *   1 to 3 years experience facilitating programs and events;
  *   Completion of course of studies in formal or informal education for a variety of audiences;
  *   Training or education in related subject areas such as Indigenous studies, arts and heritage,  archaeology is an asset;
  *   An ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  *   Ability to prepare and maintain records, reports and correspondence related to the work,
  *   Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook);
  *   Candidates should be able to self-identify as Indigenous or are a member of the  səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) or Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nations or have a close connection to a Coast Salish Nation
  *   BC Drivers License is an asset;
MONOVA: Museum of North Vancouver

  *   The centrally located new museum will have 16,000sq.ft. of public space for interactive exhibits, public gatherings, educational programs, and community events. MONOVA is committed to ensuring local Indigenous stories are told authentically throughout the facility.
  *   MONOVA envisions a dynamic and innovative site that is a community focal point and is forward-looking.
  *   Working in close collaboration with its new neighbours, the museum will be a catalyst and anchor for a vibrant Lower Lonsdale – attracting repeat vistors  both local and tourists.
  *   The new museum, located in Lower Lonsdale, is scheduled to open in 2021.
Position

  *   Status: Auxiliary
  *   Term: One year with an opportunity for extension
  *   Hours: 35 hours weekly
  *   Reports to the Program Coordinator
Salary

  *   Pay grade 17 ($27.53 per hour plus 12% in lieu of benefits, 2019 rates, provisional)
