Simon Fraser University Continuing Studies is offering a fully online
part-time Business Fundamentals and Communications program starting March
1st running until October 2021. *This program is at no cost to the
participants. *Funding for this program is supported by the Province of
British Columbia.
To be eligible for this program, applicants must be unemployed, working
part-time, or in a seasonal or contract position. For detailed eligibility

Business Fundamentals and Communications
*This fully online Business Fundamentals and Communications program funded
by the Province of British Columbia and offered at no cost to participants
runs from March to October 2021.*
This program is designed to teach you professional business communication
and administration skills. By completing the program you will be prepared
for positions in professional settings across multiple sectors such as
health care, service industries, manufacturing, natural resources
industries, and for-profit and non-profit organizations, among many others.
The program will enhance your ability to apply a professional business lens
in your daily work. You will develop skills to successfully operate within
a competitive business landscape, learning the language of business and the
communication skills required in a professional business setting. This
program will cover the roles and responsibilities of all core functions of
an organization or small business. Throughout the program you will work on
components of small assignments that lead to a capstone project of your
choosing that will have you practice reading, analyzing and interpreting
business documents, creating presentations, conveying your message to an
audience in written and verbal forms, and writing professional business
documents.
*Program Dates*
Classes will run from March to August 2021, during which you can expect to
engage in up to eight hours a week of activities, group work, self-directed
study, and live (online through Zoom) instruction delivered either Tuesday
or Thursday evening, once a week. September to October will focus on career
planning and support workshops, to support a successful transition to
continuing, full-time employment.
*On completion of the program, you will be able to do the following:*
- Employ professional skills in active listening and interpersonal
business communication
- Describe the roles and different functions required in operating a
business or organization
- Explain organizational culture and how it is aligned to organizational
success
- Understand team dynamics, and use techniques for leading team projects
- Explain how data, such as financial information, is used in reporting
and decision-making

schedule provided in advance)

*Eligibility Requirements*
- Permanent resident, Canadian citizen, or protected person residing in
B.C. (must have SIN)
- Employment has been affected by the current COVID-19 pandemic
(unemployed, part time, seasonal and/or casual)
- Interested in learning about business fundamentals and communications
- Committed to completing the program and sharing your experience with
others

Participants will be notified of their acceptance to the program by
February 24. Participants will be required to submit Participant
Information Forms (PIFs) to WorkBC upon acceptance to the program.
