*Carmen Papalia – Eyes-Closed Blind Field Shuttle, July 12th at 9:00AM*

*For immediate release // Kelowna, BC*

On Tuesday, July 12th at 9:00AM, the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan
and UBC Okanagan’s Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies will welcome
blind social practice artist Carmen Papalia for a nonvisual walking tour at
the Rotary Centre for the Arts. This experience is designed to allow
participants an opportunity to recognize and interpret urban and rural
areas from a different artistic perspective; Papalia’s works invites
participants to consider a world without sight. Papalia’s *Blind Field
Shuttles* have been featured as part of exhibitions at various art
galleries and museums, including The Whitney Museum of American Art, the
L.A. Craft and Folk Art Museum, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The tour will be guided by the non-sighted Papalia in which participants
will shut their eyes, link arms, and follow Papalia for the entire
hour-long experience. After using their non-visual senses for a prolonged
amount of time, participants will begin to recognize sight as just one of
*many* ways to engage with and interpret a place.

ARTSCO and UBC Okanagan’s FCCS are pleased to host an artist of Carmen
Papalia’s stature in Kelowna. If you’re interested in attending the
Kelowna *Blind
Field Shuttle* on July 12th, 2016 at 9:00AM at the Rotary Centre for the
Arts, you can RSVP here <https://www.facebook.com/events/1214541701902986/>!
Papalia recommends participants bring comfy shoes to wear during the
experience, as the walking tour may lead individuals down bumpy roads.
